Language
Latin, all week
A week of living Latin inside an Oxford college. You stay in a bedroom at Jesus College in the heart of the city, eat in its Elizabethan hall, study in its lecture rooms and gothic quads, and spend most of each day speaking Latin – in class, at meals and on our day trip to Roman Bath.
The best route to rapid language acquisition is full immersion, so we encourage and support you to speak Latin throughout the week, including on the excursion. Mornings are given to classes in small groups organised by level: beginners lay the foundations of grammar and vocabulary, while intermediate and advanced students consolidate their grammar and build real fluency. Afternoons bring optional special classes and silent study with a teacher on hand, and every day ends with a class on Latin poetry and its metres.
Founded in 1571 under Elizabeth I, Jesus College stands on Turl Street in the very centre of Oxford, a few minutes' walk from the Bodleian Library, the Ashmolean Museum, and the city's shops, markets and restaurants. You live in college for the week: a college bedroom, meals in hall, and classes in its lecture rooms and quads.
One day of the week we travel to Bath, the Romans' Aquae Sulis, to explore one of the best-preserved Roman bathing complexes in the world: the Great Bath, the sacred spring, and the courtyard of the temple of Sulis Minerva. Its curse tablets – Latin messages scratched on lead and thrown into the spring – show the language as ordinary people used it. We return to Oxford for dinner. The cost of the day trip is included.
After dinner there are optional group activities – games, songs, or punting on the Isis and the Cherwell – and plenty of time to enjoy the city of dreaming spires.
The week is taught by Oxford Latinitas's own tutors, who teach in Latin throughout using the active method.
Oxford is about an hour from London by road or rail, and the main airports are well connected by coach and train. If you would rather not take public transport, we will source and book a car to meet you at the airport (the cost of the car itself is not included).

From people who came
As it was my first Latin immersion trip, I was nervous coming in. But by the end of the trip I felt like I could now create full sentences and understand the language better. I would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't done an immersion programme before, and also to those who have.
