What is the Active Method?
Our teaching method, using Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata by Hans Ørberg focuses on immersive, progressive learning that enables students to understand and use Latin as a living language. Starting with Familia Romana, students build foundational vocabulary and grammatical skills through context-based readings and exercises that encourage active comprehension and response in Latin. For those enrolling in our online Latin courses, the programme provides a structured pathway from beginner to advanced proficiency. For advanced students, the course naturally progresses to Roma Aeterna, where learners engage directly with Latin literature. This second volume includes adapted passages from classical authors such as Livy, Virgil, and Cicero, guiding students through Roman history and culture in the authors' own words, while reinforcing advanced grammar and vocabulary. By the end of the programme, students will be equipped to read original Latin texts with confidence, enjoying a seamless transition to authentic classical sources.
Latin courses online for every level
Beginner I (Familia Romana Chapters 1–7)
This online Latin course is designed for students who have had very little or no exposure to Latin. By reading Familia Romana and engaging with the teacher in Latin, students will acquire a strong foundation in basic Latin grammar and develop an elementary vocabulary. Among other topics, students will learn the first two declensions of Latin nouns (and adjectives that follow the same patterns), key pronouns (ego, sē, is, meus, quis, quī), the primary syntactic functions of cases, the use of prepositions with the accusative and ablative, the present indicative (active and passive), the present imperative (active), and basic interrogative structures (quo, ubi, unde).
Beginner II (Familia Romana Chapters 8–13)
This course is aimed at students who are familiar with the basics of Latin grammar and have an elementary vocabulary. Through reading Familia Romana and using the Active Method, students will significantly expand their knowledge of Latin in these structured Latin classes online. They will study the third, fourth, and fifth declensions of nouns, additional pronouns (ille, illa, ipse; uter, neuter, alter, uterque), the accusative and infinitive construction, and the formation and usage of comparative and superlative adjectives.
Beginner III (Familia Romana Chapters 14–20)
Designed for students who already have a solid grasp of basic Latin grammar, this course continues with the reading of Familia Romana, further strengthening grammatical knowledge and reading fluency. Topics covered include numerals, the present active participle, the imperfect indicative (active and passive), the future indicative (active and passive), and the formation and use of adverbs.
Lower Intermediate I (Familia Romana Chapters 21–26)
This online Latin course is intended for students with a working knowledge of Latin grammar and a broad range of vocabulary. By reading Familia Romana and engaging in Latin conversation, students will develop their understanding of more advanced grammar. Among other topics, they will study the perfect and pluperfect indicative (active and passive), the present passive imperative, the perfect and future infinitives (active and passive), the perfect passive participle, the future participle (active and passive), the supine, and the gerund. Additionally, students will begin exploring Greek and Roman mythology through the myths of Theseus and the Minotaur, and Daedalus and Icarus. At this level, students will also read adapted versions of myths from Ovid, such as the story of Pygmalion and Europa, reinforcing their grammatical knowledge through engaging narratives.
Lower Intermediate II (Familia Romana Chapters 27–30)
Designed for students who already have a solid understanding of Latin grammar, this course deepens their exposure to complex syntactical structures. Students will continue reading Familia Romana, potentially supplemented by selections from classical authors. Topics covered include the future perfect indicative (active and passive), the present and imperfect subjunctive (active and passive), sequence of tenses, and an introduction to subordinate clauses. Students will also encounter further Ovidian myths such as the stories of Phrixus and Helle, and Alcestis, deepening their exposure to classical storytelling in Latin.
Lower Intermediate III (Familia Romana Chapters 30–34)
This course is for students with a strong command of Latin grammar who are ready to engage with increasingly sophisticated texts. At this level, students will begin their journey into Latin poetry, exploring works by authors such as Catullus, Ovid, and Martial. They will encounter various poetic forms, including elegiac couplets, and will develop an appreciation for the nuances of poetic expression in Latin. Students will study the future imperative (active and passive), the perfect and pluperfect subjunctive (active and passive), the gerundive, various subordinate clauses, and an introduction to poetic structures. This level will also introduce students to Ovidian myths including the stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Ceres and Proserpina, offering a literary and stylistic bridge to more advanced poetic readings.
Upper Intermediate I (Roma Aeterna Chapters 36–40)
Throughout Roma Aeterna, students progress through a carefully structured sequence of readings, including Hans Henning Ørberg's prose adaptation of Vergil’s Aeneid, beginning with adapted narratives designed to ease their transition into classical literature. Early sections provide accessible retellings, allowing students to reinforce their syntactical and lexical understanding before encountering increasingly authentic texts. As they progress, adaptations and modifications gradually decrease, ultimately leading to fully unadapted texts. Students will refine their syntactical knowledge by studying the historic present tense, ablatives of origin and cause, relative clauses with the subjunctive (including purpose and causal clauses), and interrogative ut-clauses. The course also includes a thorough review of previously introduced grammatical structures, focusing on gerunds, the accusative and infinitive construction, the dative with compound verbs, the ablative of comparison, and wishes. Students will also engage with more sophisticated Ovidian tales such as the stories of Polyphemus and Galatea, and Ganymedes, preparing them for unadapted texts and advanced rhetorical analysis.
Upper Intermediate II (Roma Aeterna Chapters 41–44)
Focusing on Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita and other classical texts, this course consolidates students’ knowledge of Latin prose. It covers the potential subjunctive (both definite and indefinite), the historical infinitive, conditions in oratio obliqua, further uses of the subjunctive, sequence of tenses, and various uses of the ablative and dative. Students will also study classical rhetorical techniques and stylistic variation.
Upper Intermediate III (Roma Aeterna Chapters 45–48)
This course continues the study of Livy and introduces texts from the works of Eutropius and Aulus Gellius, offering insights into later Latin prose. Students will explore clauses of hindering, further uses of the gerund and gerundive, the supine, futurum esse ut constructions, the indicative in contrafactual conditions, and the comparative relative clause. Special attention will be given to idiomatic expressions, technical vocabulary, and indirect commands in Senate resolutions.

Focusing on Sallust’s Bellum Iugurthinum and texts by Eutropius, this online Latin course expands students’ exposure to complex syntax, including rhetorical questions, velle with the subjunctive, oportere and necesse est with the subjunctive, and the ethical dative. Special emphasis is placed on the stylistic features of Sallust’s Latin, as well as numerical adverbs and advanced locative expressions.
Advanced III (Roma Aeterna Chapters 54–56)
This course is centred on Cicero’s Pro Lege Manilia, De Re Publica, and Somnium Scipionis. Students will refine their command of Latin through the study of Heteroclitic nouns, the epexegetical genitive, and advanced syntactical structures.
