Latin immersion trip – Rome

Our week-long intensive, fully immersive Latin course at the beautiful Palazzola Estate offers you the chance to take your fluency to the next level in stunning surroundings on the outskirts of Rome.

Palazzola, or Palatiolus in Latin, was originally a monastery that housed several orders through the Middle Ages. It is located in the Alban hills, overlooking Lake Albanus, not far from the lake and forest of Nemi. The area has been renowned for its natural beauty since ancient times, and it was here that Roman and Renaissance nobles placed their villas to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

By speaking, reading, writing and even singing in Latin, beginners will gain a firm grasp of foundational grammar and vocabulary, while intermediate and advanced students will consolidate their grammar and see a marked increase in fluency.

The all-inclusive price covers full board, lodging, tuition, educational materials, unlimited access to our knowledgeable, experienced teachers, agreed airport transfer, and one excursion to an archaeological site.

Most of your day will be spent speaking Latin with your fellow students and instructors. Classes will consist of a mix of language instruction, in groups organised by level of Latin fluency, and grammar sessions, reading groups, songs, and optional games and drama, all in mixed groups to help students get to know each other. There will be time set aside for silent study, with teachers on hand to answer any questions. One day will be dedicated to an excursion to an archaeological site, giving you the opportunity to learn about Roman culture in situ and speak Latin in places where the language thrived for centuries.

Academic excellence

  • The course will be organised and run by the highly experienced Oxford Latinitas Greek teaching team.

  • Pre-course diagnostic: one of the team will have a short 1:1 call with each applicant to ensure that everyone is placed in the right group, and to answer any questions about the curriculum.

The best route to rapid language acquisition is full immersion, so we will encourage the use of ancient Greek as the only language spoken for the duration of the course, including on the field trips.
