A week of living Ancient Greek in Ephesus – a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in myth, philosophy, and architectural wonder. You stay, eat and study together on a private campus a short drive from the ruins, take classes grouped by level, and spend most of each day speaking Ancient Greek with your fellow students and teachers – in class, at meals, and among the monuments themselves.

A week spoken in Ancient Greek

The best route to fluency is full immersion. Classes combine language instruction in groups organised by level with targeted grammar sessions, reading groups and optional games, and newer and more assured speakers each get the support they need. Teachers are on hand throughout the week, and Greek is spoken on the excursions as well.

Whatever your level now, a week of hearing, speaking, reading, and writing Greek will make a marked difference to your fluency.

Ephesus

Tradition said the Amazons founded Ephesus; its roots lie in the older Anatolian city of Apasas, and the Ionian Androclus refounded it after the migrations of around 1200 BC. Herodotus counts it among the Ionian cities, whose climate he thought the fairest in the known world. It was the city of Heraclitus, and the home of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders.

Ephesus and early Christianity

Few cities matter more to the history of the Church. Paul lived and preached in Ephesus for years and later wrote to its community; tradition connects the Gospel of John with the city, and the Basilica of St John stands over the apostle's tomb. Ephesus is one of the Seven Churches of Asia in the book of the Apocalypse, and in the fifth century it hosted major councils of the Church. Reading the New Testament in Greek here is an experience of its own.

The excursion

One full day, or two half-days, will be spent at the archaeological sites of Ephesus: the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Temple of Hadrian, the Odeon, and the agoras, as well as the Temple of Artemis and the Basilica of St John.

Yes. Classes are grouped by level, from complete beginners to advanced readers, and every group is taught at its own pace.

Will I really be speaking Greek all day?

Most of the day, yes – in class, at meals and on the excursion. That is what makes a week of immersion worth months of study at home. Teachers are always on hand to help.
